Editing my Double Page Spread:

Here is my picture that I took before I edited it. I was aiming to make the colours in the graffiti stand out more and to make the model and his clothes look a bit darker, as my genre of music that I have chosen, hip-hop, started off and came from the underground, a darker place.

I created my final photo by making a few adjustments to the original image. First of all I changed the brightness and the contrast to suit the levels that I was aiming to achieve. Next I used the smudge tool to smudge the top part of the image, to give it a flowing feel. Finally I used the brush tool, changed it to a bigger size and brushed the top part of the image in black to make it look like it's faded in this area.

To create my InDesign page I first had to create a new document for my double page spread. I set the document to have two columns so that I could have my text in one and have it evenly aligned on the page. I set the margins so that there would be a gap between the top, bottom, outside and inside of the page, meaning that the text would not be squashed against the edges of the page.

I started off by using the place tool to place my edited image into InDesign.

I then created and edited my main title text of my double page spread in Photoshop. I used a drop shadow on the text to make the text look like it is coming off the page.

Next I placed these png's of the text into my InDesign document for my double page spread.

I then copied in the text that I had previously written for this article and pasted into the document. I changed the font to ... I used this font because...

After I had finished the left hand page I changed the document to a double page so I could add the rest of the article to the other page.

I then moved the rest of the text that I had previously written to the bottom of the page and changed the main title text to a much bigger size and stretched it across both of the pages.

I moved the main title text to above the models head so that it filled up that part of the page. I still kept part of the text overlapping onto the next page so that it looks like it is standing out from the page. I also wrote more of the article and put a snippet from the article in bigger, bolder letters and in the centre of the page.

Next I decided to put a white outline around the model on the left hand side page.

This is so that I was able to wrap my introduction text around this picture.

Next I changed the artists heading to a bigger font and put a drop shadow on the text.

But I decided that the heading looks too out of place on the page. That's why I decided to change the part of the introduction text where it mentions the artists name to a different colour. I went with yellow as this compliments the green in the background on the wall.

Next I finished writing my article for this page.

I added my name at the bottom of the page in a calligraphy style font to give the article a more personal touch.

To finish off I made the very first letter of the article big to draw the readers attention to it, created a border around the box of text so that there was a gap between the words of the article and that of the quote in the box, I changed the font of the main article text to match the font in the centre of the page and I added the magazine name, page number and website to the bottom right of the page.

Editing my Contents Page:

To start with I had to edit my photo. This is the original photo which I took in the sound booth at UTC Sheffield.

To edit the photo, I first if all changed it to black and white. The I adjusted the brightness and contrast to make the model stand out more against the white background. Next I changed the levels so that model's clothes looked a darker black. Finally I used selective colour to change the black and white colours and make sure that they were visually perfect. I changed the photo in this way as hip-hop is music scene that originated in the early 1970's, when black and white cameras were still in popular demand and colour cameras were only available to people with lots of money. People who were involved in hip-hop generally didn't have access to lots of money, this is why I have showed this through changing the picture from colour to monochrome.

After I had edited the photo, I set up the InDesign document. I used the specifications of my magazine that I am using as my inspiration.

Here is what the page looks like blank.

First of all I placed the photo into the document, added some boxes, text and rearranged these to make it look like a professional contents page.

After looking at my inspirations contents page, I decided to remove the boxes and align the text to the right. This is so that it looks more aesthetically pleasing and is easier to read.

Next I added more content titles to the page.

After this I decided to remove the magazine title from the top left as this wasn't on my inspirations contents page. I also added

Editing my Front Cover:

I started by creating the Photoshop document for my cover page. I set the

This was my original photo that I took in the photo shoot. The background in my opinion was too bland and not as colourful as I was hoping it to be. I then decided to make some adjustments to this photo.

The adjustments that I carried out were to bring up the contrast and drop the brightness in the whole image, use the levels tool to finalise these changes, change certain colours by using the colour select tool to make them stand out more and to bring the vibrance levels up, making the photo more clear and crisp.

I then put the edited photo into my specifically created Photoshop document and re-sized it to have the model in the centre of the page. I then started by adding my short titles at the very top of the page. I added a drop shadow

I decided to use these measurements so my magazine could match the exact specifications of a real, hip-hop magazine, The Source. I decided to use 1 column for my contents page as this is what my model magazine also had. I also think it would look more visually pleasing and would be easier to read if the text flowed down just 1 column.

For my front cover I decided to set the width of the page to 197mm and the height of the page to 275mm. I did this so that the page could match my model magazine and so that all my pages would have to be the same size as this page.
